Duties

The job of an assistant airport manager, sometimes referred to as the deputy director of aviation, is to help the airport manager fulfill the tasks and responsibilities of maintaining an airport. This may include the purchase, maintenance, and staffing of airport vehicles, and equipment. Assistant airport managers may help the senior manager or director in negotiating lease agreements with airport tenants, develop budgets, and monitor airport operations. Office work is usually involved, and the assistant airport manager usually relies on computers, fax machines, telephones, and other tools to do their job.

Challenges

The job of an assistant airport manager can be stressful and require dealing with emergencies, staff shortages, or problems with airport equipment. At many airports, the assistant airport manager must be on call 24 hours a day and respond quickly to any emergency that arises. When having to negotiate leases with airport tenants, the assistant airport manager may have to travel to meet with clients or government officials.

Qualifications

Candidates for the job of assistant airport manager should have strong written and oral communication skills, problem-solving skills, and be familiar with government aviation regulations as they apply to the airport. A valid and current driver’s license is required. Federal law requires that new hires pass employment verification and fingerprint checks. A federal security clearance is also required for this position.

Requirements

Employers prefer candidates with a four-year degree in business, airport or aviation management, or a related field. Some employers, particularly at larger airports, may also require a minimum of five years work experience in Airport Operations, Airport Management, Administration, Public Management, or a related field. American Association of Airport Executives accreditation (AAAE) is a plus.

Salary and Benefits

$53,165-$167,000
